Getting sick in your vacation property.
Apparently when we combine our regular work load at the office with the additional pressures of pulling off a great vacation it’s easy to get ill. It all revolves around stress and the management thereof. The phenomenon is called “vacation illness.”
There are few things worse than being on vacation and getting sick. Being stuck in a hotel room and staring at the four walls can be even more sickening.
Believe me, if it hasn’t happened to you, you don’t want it to; if it has, you know what I’m talking about! And, to make things even worse, consider what happens if/when your kid(s) gets sick on vacation.
I’m writing this because I spent the last three days nursing two of my kids who had the flu. And, sadly, I spent about 16 hours of yesterday, sleeping cuz I was sick too! I thought about what it would have been like if we were on vacation and a blog post came to mind.
Anyone who has had this experience will agree with me. Your family is out and about having fun, riding the rides or sliding down the slopes or hitting the links or catching some rays on the beach and there you are laying in the bed staring at the popcorn ceiling. YUK.
However, I believe that if you get sick while on vacation and you’re in a vacation rental you are probably going to get to feeling better sooner. Maybe not physically but psychologically and the health of one’s mind is tantamount to the health of one’s body.
This is pure speculation and there is not a word written anywhere supporting my claim and it is just that… a claim. But, if you consider your surroundings it may help you get feeling better sooner.
First of all, in a vacation rental you’re not staring at four walls, you probably have a nice sitting area with a big screen TV, a decent library of movies filled with shows you haven’t seen a few times; a fireplace, and, hopefully, a “healing view.”
Secondly, in a vacation rental if you have packed properly, you have your supply of medicine.
Third, in a vacation rental, if you actually have an appetite, you’ve got a private kitchen available to make yourself something.
Fifth, in a vacation rental if you have a pool, you can soak in it, privately.
None of these, except for the medicine (that is, if you packed it), will you find in your typical hotel room, only in a vacation rental.
Two years ago my family and I stayed in a beautiful single family home vacation rental and all three of my kids got sick. When I say they got sick man did they get sick. However, to a child they told me they were going to be okay. You see, each bedroom had its own TV, each kid could sit and watch whatever they wanted.
In the night, the master suite was big enough that all of us camped out together.
The kids were sick only one day but it was a looong day. Believe me, their mother and I were very grateful we had room to spread out during the day. The kids were sleeping or watching TV in their own rooms and we were able to be there for them but enjoy, to the extent we could, our time together.
The next day everyone was feeling better and our vacation was back on.
So one of the keys to not getting sick in your vacation rental is planning. Plan ahead, way ahead. More on this to come.
