Internet access

Keeping in touch, electronically, while on vacation in a vacation rental.

Is internet access in a vacation rental too much to ask for these days?  I know there is a certain cachet to “not being connected” on vacation but if you are a frequent traveler, or if you are a typical two times a year kinda traveler, is it too much to ask for to get internet access while on vacation?

I am sometimes stunned to find out there isn’t internet access in the accommodation or nearby.  We don’t mind the “nearby” thing.  If it’s within walking distance or it’s a short drive away that’s okay.  That’s actually kinda cool: “almost not connected.”

However, since there are so many vacation rentals available to choose from, we are near the point where we don’t care if it’s the Taj Mahal for $47.99 a night; if it doesn’t have internet access we will quickly move on to the next listing.  Let me make the choice to connect or not don’t thrust it upon me.

Notice I said “near the point” cuz at $47.99 I’d tell whomever couldn’t live without the net to jump on the nearest camel and have fun pinging!

But I digress…
It was a different story during trip we took just four months ago.  It could have been a nightmare.  My wife HAD to look at a file in her in-box but she couldn’t read it on her crack-berry. From start to finish, it took my wife and me almost three hours on that Friday afternoon to get her connected so she could download the file.

Thankfully we had extended family with us to watch our kids otherwise this would have really blown it as we had to drive 20 minutes into “town” to find a wireless connection.  And, truthfully, she and I enjoyed our time together, just the two of us in my Yukon. – Hey! get your minds outta the gutter… that’s my wife!

We spent a lot of time on the phone with her company’s technical staff downloading this file and unzipping that file and propagating (easy there big-boy…again, we’re talking about my wife here!) her system with the…. ahh… crap … forget it.  You get the idea; this was a serious hassle.  PLUS we were not hanging out with our family which was the entire purpose of the trip.

What got me as mad as a ferret on Redbull was to learn that to get internet installed at this house was free! And the monthly fee was less than $40.00!!! COME ON!  How did I learn this?  I saw one of those ubiquitous communications companies maintenance truck drive by and called the number on the side.

I let the homeowner know about our experience.  She said she didn’t know that it was that cheap and was going to get it installed ASAP.   She did, by the way, get it installed two weeks later; she told me so in an email.  Lotta good that did me at the time!

So the point is this.  YOU are responsible for your own connection issues.  If anyone in your party is going to need internet access in a vacation rental make sure you do your homework and get all of your systems up and running properly beforehand.  It’s not the homeowners fault.  We could have easily had all of this taken care of if we would have thought it through in the days leading up to the trip.

Or you can simply stay in vacation rentals with internet access.

MORE TO COME!
