Good point. If you notice one of my first posts, I'm not bashing hotels at all. I recommend hotels for shorter stays. As a matter of fact, last year my family took a trip to Monterey, CA. We stayed there for something like four nights in a beautiful vacation rental right on the beach. We decided to take an over-nighter to San Francisco and used points to pay for two hotel rooms on Fisherman's Wharf.
However, on that same trip, at that same hotel, we met a couple from our home area. They told us that the breakfast for the four of them at the hotel was $90.00. Our breakfast was paid for by the hotel due to the program we are part of with them. So, saving money on the room may just get you bit pretty hard when it comes to paying for your meals. Especially in San Francisco!

I guess the biggest plus now for hotels over vacation rentals are the points programs that they offer allowing you to stay for free after enough points are aquired. It would be a good move for the vacation rental owners to collaborate and offer the same thing. I used to use vacation rentals alot in the past, but it's difficult to justify the expense when I can find a place nearby for free.
